Oh my god, OP here, and this is SO GREAT. Dang, I love the rationale you framed for this situation--the setting is super evocative. And oh my god, the flashbacks of Caleb and Astrid and Eodwulf helping each other through these terrible situations! Absolutely inspired, and I love the ache of Caleb wanting to help Essek in that same way, augh. So excited to see where you take this!
