Yussa is a gold dragon with a thing for magical competence. Elves are pretty long-lived and elves of the Kryn Dynasty reincarnate, so Yussa makes some assumptions about Essek’s age and experience and propositions him. Essek could use powerful allies and is not going to turn down the chance to make one. And we already know he thinks other wizards are hot.
